  1. What a wonderful sight.Gerard’s Barnacle Goose eggs. He said you have orchards of Barnacle Goose trees in your part of Scotland. Branches fall off and end up on the beach. He said that when the shells open by degrees, the little goosey legs will pop out and eventually the little geese will be hanging on by their bills.He would be surprised by the bottle though. .

    • Thank you so much for this wonderful snippet of information. I’d not researched the origin of the common name and I now understand why Linnaeus used anatifera for the species name. It is a pelagic species and we often find them attached to floating debris, usually fish boxes or logs. The bottle was rather more unusual and the barnacles were really fresh – often they’re not too fresh and very smelly, however the shell are beautiful.
