Ugly brute really, isn’t he (if you don’t mind me saying!)? Perfectly engineerd though , no doubt to ensure the maximum possibility of cross-pollination – but I am sure you can tell me the proper biological reason for the beards.
Beauty is in the eye of….As you asked the beard is the land strip for the pollinators.
